Enhancing Justice: Vulnerable Populations 

The APS College of Forensic Psychologists will be holding its inaugural College Symposium on 7-8 September 2017.

This event, to be held during the non-APS Congress year, will focus on applied practice and matters of current relevance for forensic psychologists and those working in the forensic, criminal justice, and related fields.

The symposium will be an opportunity for College members and their colleagues to meet with keynote speakers from areas impacting on the practice of forensic psychology, in an informal and relaxed setting. The Symposium will follow a new and dynamic format where keynote presentations will be followed by a plenary session or masterclass, maximising opportunities for questions and discussion.  

Venue

The Cairns Institute, Ring Road East, James Cook University, Cairns, Queensland.

Over 4,000 students study at JCU Cairns, including about 380 international students. The campus location is spectacular – surrounded on three sides by rainforest-covered mountains. Located near the northern beaches in the suburb of Smithfield, the campus is 15 kilometres north of the city centre.

Symposium Chair Welcome

On behalf of the Symposium Organising Committee, I invite you to register for the APS College of Forensic Psychologists Symposium, to be held at The Cairns Institute, James Cook University, Cairns, Queensland, 7-8 September, 2017. 

The organising committee has developed an interesting and topical program, addressing issues of currency for not only forensic psychologists, but also practitioners working across forensic, clinical, criminal justice, and related fields. 

We have 5 keynote speakers presenting on topics of juvenile detention and youth justice, family violence, child abuse and complex trauma, and practice with indigenous offenders and across rural communities. The Symposium dinner, to be held at Yorkey’s Knob Yacht Club overlooking the ocean, will provide an opportunity to hear about policing in north Queensland, and a chance to relax and socialise with colleagues. 

This is the first of a new ‘symposium’ style event for the College. Keynote presentations will be followed by facilitated discussions providing an opportunity for a more focused exploration of key practice issues and challenges.    

With the tropical Far North Queensland setting, speakers addressing current issues of importance for forensic practice, and the opportunity to link with the broader forensic psychology network, this will be a unique and valuable experience.
