Paula R Nathan

Paula R Nathan is one of the three Consultant Clinical Psychologists in the Health Department of W.A. and Founding Director of the Centre for Clinical Interventions (CCI), Perth. She graduated from the Master of Clinical Psychology Program at the University of Western Australia (UWA, 1981), worked for Professor Paul Martin as an SRO for three years on an NHMRC grant, then as Lecturer in the Department of Psychology (1986). She gained Specialist Clinical Psychology Registration (1983) and full membership of the College of Clinical Psychologists.

Paula has widely been regarded through her career as an outstanding therapist, clinical supervisor and researcher. As Lecturer, and intermittently Acting Clinical Program Director, she proved herself to be an excellent teacher and was always popular with the students.

She moved to Royal Perth Hospital, mid 1990s, as Profession Head and Research Director of the West Australian Institute for Psychotherapy Research (WAIPR), which she successfully transformed into the Centre for Clinical Interventions (CCI). Both are classic examples of the scientist-practitioner model. CCI provides a specialist state-wide program that includes:

  • treating adults suffering from complex anxiety, affective and eating disorders
  • conducting applied research
  • providing training and supervision for mental health practitioners in psychotherapy
  • providing comprehensive and extensive free evidence-based workbooks and other resources to consumers/carers and practitioners, via their popular internet site www.cci.health.wa.gov.au. For the first five months of 2012 the site registered 216,400 ‘unique visits’, 404,000 visits, and 2.4 million pages viewed.

CCI provides the only public community based eating disorders service for youth and adults in WA.

CCI have designed and evaluated specialist training programs and courses, including those for depression, anxiety and eating disorders; they are used throughout Australia and translated into many languages. The courses and trainers are consistently highly rated in their evaluations on all the many scales used. Placements at CCI are highly sought after. CCI research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of disorders and the processes of change in psychotherapy as well as clinical outcomes, and contributes to effectiveness research in real life settings.

Paula’s record is unusual as it is not the record of a typical clinical academic or clinician. It is an outstanding record of leadership and contribution in clinical services, training and research that has made an impact of a magnitude that few could match. Hence, the Clinical College Selection Panel unreservedly recommends Paula for the Ian M Campbell Memorial Prize.
