Chair welcome message

Don-ThompsonWelcome to the 2015 APS Forensic Psychology Conference.

The theme is Justice Reinvigorated: Strengthening contributions from Forensic Psychology. The conference focuses on integrating the different perspectives, not only of survivors and offenders, but across the whole spectrum of psychologists who work at different levels in the justice system - as court experts, within policing, involved in treatment of offenders and victimes, and who work in acedemic and applied settings. This conference translates the growing evidence base within forensic psychology into on-the-ground forensic practice. The Organising Committee has put together an exciting program combining skills based workshops, keynote addresses, and dedicated symposia and paper streams.

During this period of heighted terrorism alert it is timely that we have a dedicated workshop that addresses this phenomenon by Kate Barrell. We are particularly excited by the Keynote Address by Gail Furness SC, Counsel Assisting the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, and learning from her what forensic psychologists could contribute to this most distressing aspect of our society. The conference is privileged to have Ian Freckelton QC provide a Keynote Addressabout how psychologists are perceived in court, and he will also provide a workshop that educates psychologists how to give competent evidence in court.

We have organised a number of social opportunities for delegates to meet and mix with new and old acquaintances. We are delighted to hold the Fright night Conference Dinner at the Sydney Aquarium. We have been given exclusive rights to this venue and you are free to roam around the venue at will. However, there will no fish on the menu!

Finally, I would like to thank all the people who have contributed to to making this conference a success - the Organising Committee members, Chrs Lennings and the Scientific Committee, the student volunteers, the Keynote speakers and presenters, and the professional staff at the APS National Office, especially Lucy Krelle and Melanie Hecht.

On behalf of the College of Forensic Psychologists and the Organising Committee, I hope you have a stimulating and thought provoking APS Forensic Psychology Conference.
