South-West Sydney Branch recently celebrated the APS 50th Anniversary with a dinner and trivia night, and five of our longest standing members received gifts and certificates in acknowledgement of their membership longevity. A great night was had by all. South-West Sydney Branch was only formed in November 2005, but we have members whose association with the APS goes back as long as 40 years, and we were honoured to be able to celebrate this milestone event with some of them.
Psychology Week coincides with an annual festival held in Campbelltown, the Festival of Fisher’s Ghost, so we are using the opportunity to promote Psychology Week and APS Psychologists with a street stall at the Fisher’s Ghost markets 12 November. The street markets are usually very well attended, so this is a fabulous opportunity to promote our profession locally.
Later in November we are running a CPD event Hypnotherapy and Healing. Previously, an introductory workshop was run, and members were keen to learn more. Our presenter, Eileen Davis, is a regular attendee at general meetings, and has a wealth of experience and knowledge to impart. We anticipate that this event will be very well received. This CPD event is now listed on the Events Calendar, and will be held Sunday, 20 November.
We continue to use our Branch Facebook page as another way to stay connected to members. We welcome information about local services, peer-to-peer opportunities, and generally interesting and informative psych-related posts. Members are welcome to search for “APS South-West Sydney Branch” on Facebook, and can request to be added by one of the executive committee members.
Our AGM will be held 2 December at Liverpool Catholic Club. We have a small but hard-working committee, who continue to come up with ideas for short presentations with high-quality presenters. The presentations are organised to run for approximately 60 minutes at the conclusion of our general meetings.
I would like to thank the committee for their efforts and support this year, especially the Secretary, Gina and Treasurer, Judith.

Chair, South West Sydney Branch
Our fledgling branch has now had two meetings and two committee meetings. We currently meet at the University of Western Sydney on the second Thursday on a bi monthly basis. To date our meetings have constituted a small but enthusiastic group who appear to be keen to foster an inclusive, active and welcoming branch which not only provides networking and professional development opportunities to members, but also provides a communication link between our members and the APS.
Speaking to those who have attended the meetings thus far, many have been keen to become more actively involved in the APS and feel that the establishment of this new branch will enable them to do so. It is hoped that in time we will see many more members at our meetings.
As South West Sydney encompasses quite a large geographical area one of our challenges is to make PD events as accessible to as many members as possible and we acknowledge that in order to do this we may need to hold these events in varied locations. To this end our first PD event will be held at Campbelltown on Friday 12 May at 7 pm. We have been lucky to secure the services of Michael Burge who will address the members on the latest developments in the treatment of Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress. His address will then be followed by wine and cheese. We are hoping for a good attendance on the night and hope that it provides a further opportunity for members to become acquainted and ultimately involved in future branch activities.
Finally, Diane has been working on the branch website which will soon be up and running. This will no doubt make it easier for members to keep up to date with branch news and upcoming PD events.
