COP Careers Fair

On Wednesday the 23rd of August, NSW COP held its annual Careers Fair at the Angel Place Conference Centre.  The variety of organisations attending the 2006 Careers Fair – Chandler Macleod, Davidson Trahaire, GENeSYS, Genos, SHL, PDI, PTG-Global – highlighted to the students the diversity of knowledge and skills within the field of organisational psychology. Equally, the response from attendees was outstanding, with over one hundred registrations for the event.

These organisations provided enthused students with an opportunity to identity areas of interest and network with potential employers. Equally, this was a fantastic opportunity for organisations employing organisational psychologists to showcase their organisation to the upcoming organisational psychologists and communicate their point of difference to those attending. With fascinating speeches from James Breeze (PTG), Kylie Harrison (Davidson Trahaire) Ben Palmer (Genos), and Lindsay Perlman (Chandler Macleod), students and other young professionals learned a great deal about the many applications of organisational psychology.

September 2006

This is certainly an exciting time for COPWA as we focus on rejuvenating our presence and planning our future direction. Unfortunately, Caroline Rodgers had to make the decision to step down as Chair in June due to competing commitments. We thank her for the work she did for COPWA. At an Extraordinary Meeting of the Committee on 21 June 2006, Paul Syme was elected as interim Chair until the AGM in November when formal elections occur.

The Committee has met monthly to consolidate the College’s direction and it was decided that the development of a Strategic Plan was of utmost importance. A meeting will be held on 14th October 2006 to develop the Strategic Plan within the following framework:

  • The objective is to set goals and strategies for specific priorities that can be addressed within the next 12 months
  • Immediate priorities identified by the Committee (but not limited to) include professional development and networking, membership, students and advocacy
  • The process for the Strategic Planning meeting will include setting immediate goals, determining outputs and allocating responsibility to COPWA committee members
  • The 2006/ 2007 Strategic Plan will be presented to the 2006 AGM
  • The process will be reviewed and a 3 year Strategic Plan will be developed for the 2007 AGM.

The AGM will be held on 8 November 2006 and followed by a Professional Development presentation entitled “The Psychopath in the Suit”. Our last committee meeting for the year will be held on 13 December 2006.

Thanks must be extended to all people who have organised and participated in COPWA events and activities, particularly those involved in the Committee. Our focus is to continue these relationships and engage people from a broader cross section of our community.

COPWA August 2006 Update

Unfortunately we've had to defer our next COPWA event which was scheduled for 23 August. Despite a thorough call for expressions of interest from students at all of the universities (Masters and PhD level) we did not receive enough interest to be able to proceed. We still plan to hold the student presentation event at another time which is more suitable to the students. Our next event is due to occur in October so stay tuned for updates on this. In the interim please don't hesitate to contact one of the committee if you have any feedback or suggestions for PD events. We are also looking for more committee members so if you are an eligible COPWA member (student, affiliate, associate or full) please contact me to advise of this. The more people we have to assist us, the more events and activities we'll be able to arrange for our members. We look forward to members coming forward.

COPWA News July 2006

After a period of what must seem like silence from COPWA, we have rejuvenated our presence. Unfortunately, Caroline Rodgers had to make the decision to step down as Chair in June due to competing commitments. We thank her for the work she did for COPWA. At an extraordinary meeting of the committee on 21 June 2006 Mr Paul Syme was elected as interim Chair, at least until the next AGM in October, and possibly beyond. Congratulations to Paul.

With respect to PD activities and presentations, for our next event we have decided to give our up and coming organisational psychology students (Masters/PhD level) the opportunity to present to members with regard to their theses. We expect to run this event on the evening of Wednesday 23 August at a venue to be announced. The event will be free to attend and we encourage you to come along and support the next generation of organisational psychologists in WA and learn about the latest research in our field. Further to this we are planning to hold a PD event in October.

We encourage you as our members to contact us and provide feedback and suggestions at any time in relation to how COPWA can better serve you. If you would like to become involved on the committee please send me an e-mail. We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting or PD event. Stay tuned for more information regarding COPWA's next event.
