Convener
Mr David Joyce
I began my life as a psychologist in community mental health in the inner west of Sydney while still provisionally registered. In the seven years since, I have moved into private practice where I work with adults and adolescents. I am a strong advocate for evidence-based psychological practice and have been a member of the APS since my student days at UNSW where I was involved in awarding the inaugural APS Lecturer of the Year Award. I have become a big fan of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy over the past five years and see its effectiveness and relevance in my work almost every day.
Committee Member
Dr Matthew Warburton
I am a General Medical Practitoner (GP) and ACT Therapist working in Brisbane since 2020. I moved to Australia in 2008 and have worked for 2 years in rural Victoria and 10 years in Cairns, FNQ.
I became interested in using psychotherapeutic techniques in GP consultations in 2020 and have been bitten by the ACT bug! I now use ACT in close to 50% of my GP consultations and I also work in a psychology clinic 1 day a week during pure psychotherapy.
I also work for Ahpra as a Medical Clinical Advisor giving clinical input on medical notifications for the last 5 years.
I have 2 step boys, a toddler myself and my wife is pregnant again.
As well as ACT on myself, my therapists include 2 cavalier King Charles Cavaliers, a Main Coon cat and my motorcycle!
Committee Member
Ms Belinda Smith
I completed my BPsych(Hons) in 2009, graduating with first class honours, a university medal and winning the APS Prize.
Completing the 4+2 pathway, I resonated with ACT as it aligned to my values and way of engaging with clients. I have practiced ACT ever since and enjoy seeing clients improve their mental health through committed actions and defusing from unhelpful thoughts.
I value authenticity, belongingness, courage, and creativity, and have lived these values in various leadership and management roles, including senior clinical and operational leadership, senior practitioner, learning and organisational development, and lecturing, tutoring and biostatistician roles.
Nowadays, I run a growing clinic where team members can flourish, resulting in excellence in healthcare and positive health and lifestyle outcomes for all humans.
I am working towards competence in providing Animal Assisted Therapy with Theodore, our therapy dog in training, who already brings our clients joy.
