Advanced observational skills in therapy

APS, College of Counselling Psychologists

Professional Development for Psychologists and those interested in the Psychology profession.

16 April 2009. QUT, Kelvin Grove Campus.

Elizabeth Tindle, FAPS

Last night over forty professional and budding psychologists enjoyed a two hour experiential presentation by Brian O'Hanlon a long time member of the Australian Psychological Society, College of Counselling Psychologists. The topic was "Advanced observational skills in therapy". Brian demonstrated many simulated counselling skills and encouraged us to work in groups practicing and testing our powers of observation when in a didactic situation. This was a useful and entertaining evening for both the novice and the more experienced practitioners. We had the largest contingent of psychology students, both under-graduate and post-graduate, we have ever had at our meetings. Now that the School of Psychology and Counselling has its home at Kelvin Grove we hope to be able to provide a professional base and an opportunity for students to broaden their university experience by meeting and working with professionals in the field.

Visitors came from the Sunshine and Gold Coasts as well as northern NSW. We also had two former Directors of University Counselling Services in attendance and a few accompanying parents or partners.

A light supper was provided. This successful professional development evening was provided gratis to all participants.
